Josephine on Listening to the Body and Staying Independent

Movement has never been simple for Josephine.

Living with cerebral palsy means that every movement requires intention, awareness, and patience. Some days her body feels cooperative. Other days it feels heavy, slow, or unpredictable. Still, she chooses to move—because movement, for her, is about more than exercise. It’s about independence.

Josephine does what she can, where she can.

Sometimes that means going to the gym. Other times it means walking outside, pacing hallways, or simply standing and shifting her weight at home. Movement doesn’t have to look impressive to be meaningful. It only has to be honest.

Through movement, Josephine learns her body. She pays attention to what strengthens her, what supports her balance, and what helps her remain as independent as possible. Staying active is one of the ways she works to stay out of a wheelchair—not out of fear, but out of care for her future.

She has learned that movement isn’t about forcing her body to do things it resists. It’s about listening. Adapting. Respecting her limits without letting them define her.

Every step, every stretch, every small effort is an act of self-advocacy. It’s her way of saying: I am still here. I am still capable. I am still moving forward.

Josephine no longer measures movement by distance or speed. She measures it by presence.

And today, that is enough.
